I keep meaning to update ...
So as pinktyrant mentioned, we had a very good weekend, we went and saw Coldplay and just generally enjoyed seeing each other. I miss living in the same city (the same apartment even!), but this was the first time that she left (or I left), that after the leaving happened I didn't cry a lot. I guess I'm getting used to the leaving portion of the trip. It's just every time she's here, I realize that I don't have any close friends here, and that I'm lonely and being old and crotchedy as I am, I don't really see that changing, especially as it's been about 2 years now.

But enough about that, you can read PT's entry if you're at all interested in what we did this weekend. I purchased the Demeter Garden Tomato fragrance that I've been coveting for about 2 years finally, and I love it, and it smells really good, but it wears off really quickly. Or I just get used to it really quickly. Something. So that's my part of the story that corresponds to her eyeshadow shopping.

Anyway, yesterday was a weird day.

Mr. K and I had planned on starting our new exercise regimen (which is: run 6 days a week [or as often as our schedules allow] at 7:30 am). Well, we got to our running place at 8:30, but at least we got there. But then! About 1/4 mile into the jog, Mr. K said something in his back starting hurting. So after I ran for a while longer we went home and he basically couldn't really move.

So then I went to Santa Cruz and talked to my new labmate, which took way longer than expected, but was good ... we need to get to know eachother, after all.

Then! I called Andy on the way home, and he went to the doctor and they told him that he had probably "jarred a kidney" which sounds really painful, but they said was no big deal. Claimed he would be fine by today. He's not.

So then, after supper, he said he wanted to go see a movie, and we saw one hour photo. Normally, he's not that excited about movies, but he really liked this one, and I thought it was good, especially the parts with the cute little man (apparently he plays vaughn? on alias? he's cute, and not really that little in general, although there was a full frontal nudity brief shot, and it was really difficult to know what was going on, because it really appeared that he was a eunuch. Maybe that was to stay within MPAA guidelines, and they blurred it? I digress) -- on the whole, a good movie, but wait to see it on video.

That's about it for now.

pinktyrant tells me that you are a linguistics person! Is this true? I'm flirting with the idea of concentrating in it. Have never taken a linguistics class, but it looks cool. What do you think?

Well, I'm an oddball. I came to U of C specifically for the purpose of doing linguistics and had already done an internship in linguistics at the University of Minnesota when I got there.

But! I LOVE linguistics, and there are some really great people in the dept. I can recommend Sadock and Dahlstrom (if she hasn't left yet).

I totally thought I would hate phonetics, but it was one of my favorite classes, and now I do speech perception which has a big basis in phonetics. On the other hand, I thought I would like phonology and didn't really care for it. The others -- syntax, semantics and morphology -- were all really good classes that I really enjoyed.

I personally found that concentrating in linguistics meant that I wouldn't have to ... um ... work? so much? Is that bad? I hope not, because that's one of the reasons I liked it. Turns out though, that I think that was because I have an aptitude for it, not because it's just inherently super simple. Phonetics is a really tough class that requires a lot of work, but it's really rewarding, but other than that, it sort of flowed for me.

Also, it's a good reason to take lots of languages! Fun, fun! You'll have the French under your belt so you'll just have to do a non-indoeuropean -- I did sign language ...

yes, any specific questions yet?

I'm one of those pathetically undecided folks, as far as concentration--I thought philosophy until recently, but phil and I have agreed to see other people, and I saw linguistics in a bar the other night and *damn*, hot, so now I'm trying to get its number.

Thanks for the general info--I don't know enough to have useful questions yet, I guess. It looks like it's going to be hard even to get the intro sequence in before third year, due to France, but I'll talk to my adviser.

It is a great understatement to say that I don't mind not having to work as much as, say, a pre-med; I think that if I want to work more, there's going to be room for that. And I may not have your aptitude.

I've still never taken a linguistics class so don't know what I'm talking about, but it sounds really really really cool from what you say about it. Thanks for commenting. :)

Poor Andy! I hope he's feeling better soon...jarring a kidney doesn't seem like something to take lightly.

Demeter Tomato...I'm not sure I've smelled that one. I like the Gingerale one because it's weird that it actually smells like gingerale. Not even just ginger. Gingerale. And I like the Altoids one.

I haven't read any LJs in forever, and I was thinking, "Hm, I wonder what's up in K's life that I'm missing out on now that I live oh-so-far-away?" So I started reading, and just as I was reading, my phone started ringing from K! But, I think it was a misdial on your part because it was just a bunch of static. Sigh.

Anyway, I try to be a good friend, really! I just don't have the aptitude for it. I'll try harder. See, I'm baking cookies. Chocolate chunk (cut up one of those HUGE pieces of Ghirardelli chocolate from Trader Joe's) w/o nuts (ran out). Next time I see you, I'll give you one, unless I've eaten them all by then. (What are the chances of that?)

Oh, and guess what? I decided to break out the scissors and chopped off a LOT of hair. I think I look 30 years old now. Hm. Oh, and instead of using LJ, I started a blog thing because M (the little blue dragon in North Carolina) pressured me into it. I'm keeping track of my motorcycle stuff there. You can see here if you are so inclined.

Oh no, the cookies are probably overdone in the oven. Agh!

I ate them all. Every single last cookie. I obviously have a problem... But, I can always bake more!

As for my haircut, it's... really short... What are you doing this week? I'm going to look at a motorcycle today!!!!! And maybe go to IKEA on the way back. And go to a concert you'd hate!!! Yizzeah! But during the week I'm freeeeeeee!
